Numbers on a Page: A Plain-Language Guide to Reading Your Blood Test Results

The notification arrives in your patient portal: your lab results are ready. You open the report and find rows of numbers, cryptic abbreviations, and reference ranges printed in small type. Some values are flagged in red. Others sit just outside the normal column. A wave of confusion — or alarm — sets in before you have spoken with anyone who can explain what any of it means.

This experience is nearly universal among patients who undergo routine bloodwork, and it points to a significant gap in how medical information is communicated. Laboratory results are among the most powerful tools in preventive healthcare, offering a window into metabolic function, cardiovascular risk, and organ health long before symptoms emerge. Yet without proper context, those numbers can generate more anxiety than insight.

At Ricci Clinic, we believe informed patients make better health decisions. What follows is a practical guide to the blood tests most commonly ordered during annual wellness visits and routine checkups — written not for clinicians, but for the people those clinicians serve.

Why Bloodwork Matters Before You Feel Anything

One of the most important things to understand about laboratory testing is that it is designed to detect change before symptoms appear. Conditions such as prediabetes, elevated cholesterol, and thyroid dysfunction can be present for years without producing noticeable signs. A blood panel offers your provider a snapshot of what is happening beneath the surface, enabling early intervention when it is most effective.

This is precisely why routine labs are ordered even when you feel perfectly well. The goal is not to find something wrong — it is to confirm what is functioning as expected and identify anything that warrants closer attention.

The Complete Metabolic Panel: Your Body's Chemistry Report

The complete metabolic panel, or CMP, is one of the most frequently ordered blood tests in primary care. It measures fourteen different values that collectively assess kidney function, liver health, blood sugar regulation, and electrolyte balance.

Glucose reflects the amount of sugar circulating in your blood at the time of the draw. A fasting value below 100 mg/dL is generally considered normal. Values between 100 and 125 mg/dL may indicate prediabetes, while readings at or above 126 mg/dL on repeated testing are consistent with a diabetes diagnosis. A single elevated reading does not confirm disease — context, fasting status, and clinical history all factor into interpretation.

Creatinine and BUN (blood urea nitrogen) are waste products filtered by the kidneys. Elevated levels may suggest the kidneys are not clearing waste as efficiently as expected, which can occur with dehydration, certain medications, or underlying kidney disease. Your provider will often evaluate these values alongside your eGFR, or estimated glomerular filtration rate, which offers a more complete picture of kidney function.

Liver enzymes — including ALT and AST — indicate how well the liver is processing substances in the blood. Mild elevations can result from factors as common as strenuous exercise or certain supplements. Persistent or significantly elevated values warrant further investigation.

Electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and calcium help regulate fluid balance, nerve signaling, and muscle function. Most adults maintain stable electrolyte levels through normal diet and hydration, but imbalances can arise with certain medications, digestive conditions, or chronic disease.

The Lipid Panel: Beyond "Good" and "Bad" Cholesterol

Few lab results generate as much patient confusion as the lipid panel. The terms "good cholesterol" and "bad cholesterol" are widely used but insufficiently nuanced to guide meaningful health decisions.

LDL cholesterol — low-density lipoprotein — is often described as the harmful form because elevated levels are associated with plaque accumulation in arterial walls. However, optimal LDL targets vary significantly based on individual cardiovascular risk. A value that is acceptable for a healthy 35-year-old with no risk factors may be considered too high for a 60-year-old with diabetes and a history of hypertension.

HDL cholesterol — high-density lipoprotein — is associated with a protective effect, as it helps transport cholesterol away from the arteries. Higher HDL levels are generally favorable, with values below 40 mg/dL in men and below 50 mg/dL in women considered low.

Triglycerides are a form of fat stored in the bloodstream. Elevated triglycerides, particularly in combination with low HDL, can increase cardiovascular risk. Fasting status significantly affects this value — eating before a lipid draw can artificially raise triglyceride levels.

Total cholesterol is the sum of all cholesterol fractions and is less informative in isolation than the individual components. Your provider will consider the full panel — along with your age, blood pressure, smoking history, and family history — when assessing your cardiovascular risk profile.

Thyroid Function Tests: A Small Gland with Broad Influence

The thyroid gland, located in the neck, produces hormones that regulate metabolism, energy, mood, and a wide range of bodily functions. Because thyroid dysfunction can mimic so many other conditions — fatigue, weight changes, mood disturbances, temperature sensitivity — blood testing is often used to either confirm or rule out a thyroid cause.

TSH, or thyroid-stimulating hormone, is the primary screening test for thyroid function. Produced by the pituitary gland, TSH signals the thyroid to produce its hormones. A high TSH value suggests the pituitary is working harder than usual to stimulate an underperforming thyroid — a pattern consistent with hypothyroidism. A low TSH may indicate the thyroid is overactive.

Reference ranges for TSH vary slightly between laboratories, which is one reason why the same numerical value may appear flagged at one facility but not another. This is an important point: reference ranges are population-based statistical thresholds, not universal definitions of health. They represent the range within which approximately 95 percent of a healthy population falls — meaning that 5 percent of healthy individuals will fall outside the range on any given test.

Free T4 and free T3 measure the active thyroid hormones themselves and are often ordered alongside TSH when initial results are abnormal or when symptoms strongly suggest thyroid involvement despite a normal TSH.

What to Do When a Value Is Flagged

Seeing a red flag or "H" (high) or "L" (low) notation beside a value in your portal can feel alarming. In many cases, a single out-of-range result requires only monitoring or a repeat test — not immediate treatment. Context is everything.
